There was a steep little forested hill
by my house growing up
that had a large, flat piece of slate emerging from it.
I would find a stone that felt right in my hand,
climb down the hill and
dig my heels in
to draw on that slate.
It was my favorite private spot, and first real canvas.
Art, in all forms of expression, has been a persistent special interest of mine for my entire life. At each turn, I let my focus shift. From cartoons to what ancient cultures left behind, from dance and movement to photography and film, from poetry to the deep well of art history, I devour it all. Looking at how it all simmers together. Everything with its own special process.
Each communicating.
In practice, I never stopped drawing, painting, folding, looking, playing.
My tools are my hands, brushes, pens, a camera, pine needles or whatever is available. It was by accident that I found my favorite medium in acrylic ink, while experimenting my way through someone else's art supplies.
Now, I try to put everything I have learned so far into play in whatever I am creating. Sometimes, that means enveloping myself in every detail, like a Renaissance painter, layer by layer. Sometimes it means intuitive colors and shapes fueled by close emotion or a distant feeling. Sometimes it involves origami, yarn, meditation, or pulling images out of my vivid dreams.
I love to play with color and light. Nature, and the nature of being,
are always present.
While I have made a lot of progress, I still have a long way to go and an insatiable curiosity. I expect my journey and my artwork to evolve as I continue to grow.
